OUR TOWN
In July, students and faculty of our professional acting lessons joined forces to produce Thornton Wilder's "Our Town", a drama classic set in a fictional American small-town in the early 1900s. The show was a rousing success, and we have a video to commemorate the play's run.
Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer-winning Our Town has been a mainstay of the American stage since its start as a Broadway sensation in 1938, and now New Image's professional acting program is bringing Wilder's town to you! This drama classic details the lives and interactions of the residents of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, a fictional town as a stand-in for America at the turn of the last century.
Our Town's success has been attributed to its fusion of intimate, touching personal drama and un-sentimentalized humanity with avant-garde techniques. Usually staged on a minimalist set, using only a handful of chairs and ladders as stage dressing, Our Town is narrated by a nameless Stage Manager, who routinely breaks the fourth wall in introducing the audience to the history-steeped town of Grover's Corners and its people. "Our claim, our hope, our despair are in the mind – not in things, not in 'scenery'," Wilder once said about the play's minimalist style.
Our Town features a large cast in a variety of small parts, which has made the play a solid choice for community theatre and school productions. For more than 70 years, Our Town has been performed across the world in dozens of languages; although a distinctly American work, the play's themes of unity and shared humanity are universal.
