Curriculum
BEAUTY FUNDAMENTALS
120 HOURS/ 12 CREDITS/ 1 QUIZ/ 1 EXAM/ 1 PROJECT/ 3 PRACTICALS
You will be provided with a solid knowledge and understanding of the basic beauty fundamentals including skin care, corrective techniques and glamour make-up application.
Get ready to learn proper etiquette, hygiene, anatomy, skin care, color theory, face and eye shapes, corrective techniques, day applications, evening and glamour applications, ethnic studies, mature applications, era make-up and men’s make-up.
BRIDAL MAKE-UP
20 HOURS/ 2 CREDITS/ 1 QUIZ/ 1 PRACTICAL
You will learn the process of bridal consultations, rates and etiquette procedures as well as bridal make-up for day, evening and ethnic weddings. This module includes wedding styles, cultural differences and a brief introduction to photography as well as lighting.
HAIR DESIGN
60 HOURS/ 6 CREDITS/ 1 QUIZ/ 1 PROJECT/ 3 PRACTICALS
This module provides you with the knowledge of hair science, products and tools as well as hair styling, building and designing a variety of down and up-dos. You will learn hair anatomy, tools, products and their uses, suitable styles for hair types and facial shapes, blow drying, roller sets, down-dos, up-dos and specialized hair techniques.
AIR BRUSHING
60 HOURS/ 6 CREDITS/ 1 QUIZ/ 3 PRACTICALS
What was once a new tool in the industry is now the industry standard. You will learn the internal workings of an airbrush, trouble shooting as well as designing templates and stencils. With these tools and knowledge you will be able to create flawless beauty, fantasy and full body make-up. Material for this course includes airbrush knowledge (parts, troubleshooting and repair), contouring, highlighting and free hand techniques, fantasy design, tattoo as well as blemish and other corrective techniques.
MAKE-UP & PHOTOGRAPHY LEVEL 1
40 HOURS/ 4 CREDITS/ 1 QUIZ/ 1 PRACTICAL
This module will help you to understand the different makeup techniques used in both color and black & white photography. You will learn the basic lighting types, effects, systems and accessories used in both film and digital photography.
The course material includes photography make-up for color and black & white, photo-shoot etiquette, make-up artist responsibilities, lighting theory, color theory and its effect on make-up application as well as the various types of photoshoots.
HIGH FASHION
40 HOURS/ 4 CREDITS/ 1 QUIZ/ 1 PROJECT/ 1 PRACTICAL
During this module you will build upon the learned skills and techniques that push you beyond the limit of your creativity. You will become familiar with the use of “croquis” design, interpretation of tear sheets, fashion etiquette and terminology, houses of design and your role as a make-up artist.
You will learn about key make-up responsibilities, haute couture vs. ready to wear, high fashion vs. avant-garde and current runway trends.
PHOTOGRAPHY THEORY
80 HOURS/ 8 CREDITS/ 4 PROJECTS/ 2 PRACTICALS
Taught by a professional photographer in conjunction with your make-up instructor, this course will enlighten you on the inner workings of a camera, allow you to understand specific camera settings, help you develop photography critiquing skills, and teach the basic of Photoshop, a tool for editing your make-up photos on the computer.
This module includes camera knowledge, settings, night & day, still life, portrait, Photoshop cropping, layered effects, color photography, black & white photography and critiquing images.
MAKE-UP & PHOTOGRAPHY LEVEL 2
60 HOURS/ 2 CREDITS/ 3 PRACTICALS
You will be perfecting all of your skills, combining them into three editorial photo-shoots for both color and black & white photography. Stylizing techniques, croquets development and photography skills will be further explored and enhanced.
Course material includes hands-on, one-on-one guidance from instructor to student. Learning techniques on the combination of make-up, hair and wardrobe design for high fashion shoots.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT
40 HOURS/ 2 CREDITS/ 2 PROJECTS
In this module students will focus on career options, interview skills and resume /portfolio development as well as film union information and applications. Working in conjunction with your instructor you will create a breathtaking portfolio consisting of your best work.
With valuable work experience gained as a student you will be able to build your make-up resume and cover letters specific to the job you are applying for.
TELEVISION, FILM & STAGE
80 HOURS/ 8 CREDITS/ 1 QUIZ/ 1 PROJECT/ 3 PRACTICALS
The TV and film industry is a busy one! You will become familiar with high definition, corrective and character make-up design, application and procedures for film, HDTV and stage as well as onset terminology, crew titles and job descriptions. The internal workings of a film set will be explored.
You will learn different styles of high definition TV make-up and character design. Theatrical make-up, script breakdowns, old-age make-up and drag are also examined.
OUT-OF-KIT EFFECTS
80 HOURS/ 8 CREDITS/ 1 QUIZ/ 4 PRACTICALS
You will learn how to create minor special make-up effects for TV and film, instructed with the subtlety necessary to ensure onscreen realism.
This module includes bruising, black eyes, scars, burns, blood, sweat, tears, scrapes, cuts, frostbite, gashes, road-rash, broken noses, bullet holes, facial hair and bald cap application.
MOVIES, MAKE-UP & MONSTERS
280 HOURS/ 16 CREDITS/ 1 EXAM/ 4 PRACTICALS
From otherworldly aliens to unearthly creatures, you will learn the fascinating process involved in the creation of gelatin, foam-latex and silicone prosthetics as well as special FX props such as a full-head creature mask and a photo-realistic severed human arm, both cast from life.
You'll be trained in the arts of life-casting for the head and body, molding in plaster, sculpting in clay and plasticine, mixing, pouring and seaming the varied ingredients of a cast, hair-punching, colour layering and the application of gelatin, foam latex and silicone appliances. You'll be called upon to utilize all your skills in creating a realistic creature or monster, and you'll conceptualize and build your own fantastic full-head mask to serve as a beautiful (or beastly) portfolio piece. All the material remains your property, so you can keep the head-cast for later use in your make-up and special effects career.
WORK EXPERIENCE
40 HOURS/ 3 CREDITS/ 1 EVALUATION
You'll take part in real film productions, ranging from short films to a full-scale, globally distributed feature film. You will interact with experienced actors, directors and film technicians, utilizing on-set etiquette and gaining valuable experience managing your job as a make-up artist on a working production. You'll study under Hollywood make-up masters Ryan Nicholson and Michelle Grady to help them beautify actors and actresses in their glamourous starring roles, deconstruct the human body with special-effects blood and gore, and even create nightmarish spirits and monsters to terrorize the actors and audience.
This module's participation and instruction varies on the start dates of production. You will be given ample time to prepare and schedule the hours needed to complete this section. The hours required might commence outside of the regular class schedule based on production times. This is the ultimate test of your training in beauty make-up and special effects, and your work here could lead to a prosperous career in the film industry. Some of our graduates have gone on to work for prestigious make-up and effects houses, assisting the productions of blockbuster Hollywood films -- you could be next!
Requirements
Applicants must display a high-level of interest in learning the skills used in the make-up industry.
When submitting an application, you must attach an application assessment essay (500 words) about you and your dream of becoming a professional make-up artist. Please note that this essay will be an essential factor when assessing your application.
Applicants must also meet the general requirements as well as the English requirements. No past experience is required.
