Makeup Fundamentals – 120 Hours

Successful makeup artists build their artistic skills upon a strong foundation of technical knowledge. Students learn to analyze the face, lips, nose, and eyes. They discover the evolution of makeup through the different eras, beginning in the 1930s till present. Students absorb the techniques to properly apply makeup for different gender and skin types. This course will also teach the importance of creating professional face charts and tear sheets. By completion, students will be fully capable of applying shaping, highlighting, and contouring techniques on any model.

 

Hair Design – 60 Hours

Students discover how to utilize hair to give themselves a professional advantage. Students learn industry hair braiding, styling, updos, and backcombing techniques to create the perfect design and bring their makeup look to completion!

Wedding Makeup – 20 Hours

This course orientates the students with the skills required to work in the booming bridal industry. Beginning with day and evening looks, students are taught how to design wedding makeups that complement individual styles and cultural traditions. Students practice the cultural traditions that change throughout North America, South Asia, and India.

High Fashion Editorial – 20 Hours

This industry is fast-paced and requires the artist to create specific looks that meet the vision of designers and their campaigns. This course educates students on how to master working under pressure while developing extravagant designs. Students discover how to satisfy the needs of their designer while remaining artistically expressive.

High Fashion Runway – 20 Hours

This course is designed to simulate the working conditions of a runway event. Students learn how to create detailed face charts, work from an existing design or tear-sheet, and discover the ins and outs of fashion etiquette. The Fashion Industry is limitless, this course will help students discover where their unique style fits in its evolving landscape.

Career Development 1 – 20 Hours

Every makeup artist needs a solid resume and portfolio to jump-start their career. In this module, students will learn about resume formatting and various platforms to showcase their work. They will have the opportunity to build their online portfolio with all the amazing work they have completed in the program thus far.

Photo Theory – 40 Hours

Everyone knows that lighting plays as much of a key role during a photoshoot as the model, wardrobe, and makeup. This course educates students on how an artist can utilize this tool to enhance their work. Understanding the professional lingo, experimenting with different lighting techniques, and how to photograph their work, are all elements of this essential course. NIC’s photographer mentor will shoot, analyze, and strengthen their skills throughout the duration.

Makeup & Photography Level 1 – 40 Hours

Vancouver’s film industry has expanded to the 2nd largest in North America. This course will focus on headshot photography. Students learn how to adjust makeup to the requirements of both performer and photographer; accentuating the makeup to fit their particular brand. Students will discover how an artist needs to adjust their work to suit all lighting types, in-studio photography, or urban shoots. In collaboration with our acting department, students have live experience shooting actors’ headshots.

Makeup & Photography Level 2 – 100 Hours

Expanding upon the previous course, students will now be introduced to the more advanced techniques required to master monochromatic, black, and white, pop art, and creative makeup. In this section, students create several complete looks while utilizing their new skills to take amazing portfolio pieces.

Airbrushing Makeup – 20 Hours

Under practical instruction, students practice imagination and delve into airbrush techniques. Students understand how to properly manipulate the airbrush gun. Once mastering the basic airbrush techniques, students learn to use the airbrush to apply beautiful makeup. This technique is sought after in the beauty industry for its flawless look, buildability, and longevity. Students will leave this course competent in the application of foundation, blush, highlight, and contouring.

Airbrushing and Body Makeup – 40 Hours

Makeup shapes the way an audience feels toward a character. In this module, students learn to define the character with their brush and how to work effectively in these unique, fast-paced, and collaborative environments. This course teaches students how to create masculine, old-age, frostbitten, and insomnia character looks. Also, students will experiment with hair and beard laying techniques.

Makeup for Stage and Set – 80 Hours

Makeup shapes the way an audience feels toward a character. Learn to define the character with your brush and how to work effectively in these unique, fast-paced, and collaborative environments. This course will teach you how create masculine, old-age, frostbitten, and deceased character looks. In addition, students will experiment with hair and beard laying techniques. As the individual requirements for stage or set become clear, allow your training to take life in a complete frozen effect makeup.

Special Makeup Effects Fundamentals – 80 Hours

Movie makeup effects are an extensive tool in the TV and Film industry. By using the combined skill set students have developed thus far, mentors will prepare students to take on exotic and realistic effects. In a series of practical exams, students experience the art of creating hyper-realistic burns, scrapes & cuts, as well as realistic aging effects and bald cap application.

Prosthetic Arts – 260 Hours

Now it will be time for students to draw upon all the knowledge and skill they have developed. From the introduction to sculpting, students will be taken through a complete understanding of advanced SPFX techniques. Mentors will educate students in the creation of Bondo pieces, Foam Latex application, Gelatin, and encapsulated silicone appliances. Students perform life casting and learn to sculpt, mold, run and apply prosthetic applications. The students’ most creative ideas will be drawn upon, as this cumulates with in-depth character creation.

Short Film Project – 60 Hours

As a group, students will take part in the production of a short film with New Image Entertainment. Provided with the script, NIC hires the actors and crew. Students will learn how to break down the script, navigate the budget, and work with the Head of Department to develop the right character looks. As this film will involve SPFX, students get the chance to apply prosthetics to the performers. As part of the production team, students work on the set to complete the film and earn an IMDb credit.

Career Development 2 – 20 Hours

This module will revisit the essential tools of a strong business plan. Reviewing and updating the students’ resume, cover letter, and portfolio as necessary, as well as developing a strong professional identity online will assure that students are ready to join their fellow working alumni. Students also gain extensive knowledge of the Unions in British Columbia and the steps it will take to achieve membership.

Beginning with day and evening looks, students will be taught how to design wedding makeups that complement individual styles and cultural traditions. Enjoy practicing the cultural traditions that change throughout North America, South Asia, and India.

This course is designed to simulate the working conditions of a runway event.
