Workshop Outline
The On Camera Scene Study Workshop curriculum is designed with the concept of providing valuable knowledge and building core skills for aspiring actors
Actors embark on a comprehensive exploration of master techniques in acting, delving into methodologies pioneered by esteemed figures such as Meisner, Chekhov, Strasberg, Cohen, Adler, and Hagen.
The journey begins with a critical discussion on the fundamental differences between film and stage acting, and the nuances of approaches required for each medium. As the week progresses, actors immerse themselves in practical applications of these techniques.
They refine their ability to respond authentically in the moment through Meisner’s “Moment-to-Moment” Repetition exercise, delve into the depths of character with Chekhov’s technique, and tap into profound emotions using Strasberg’s “Affective Memory” approach. Furthermore, they sharpen their physicality and embodiment of characters through Uta Hagen’s “Destination” exercise. Complementing these techniques is the NIC’s Approach to Script Analysis, empowering actors to dissect and comprehend the intricacies of a playwright’s or screenwriter’s world.
By week’s end, actors emerge with a newfound understanding of these techniques, equipped to breathe life into characters and stories across the stage and screen with depth and authenticity.
In week two, you will take what you have learned in week one and dive deeper into a immersive exploration of character analysis techniques. Engage in Meisner’s “Moment-to-Moment” repetition exercise to sharpen actors’ instinctive reactions, while uncovering Chekhov’s “Atmosphere” technique to craft emotional landscapes for heightened performance.
Delve into Strasberg’s “Affective Memory” exercises to access and authentically portray emotions and empower character physicality through Uta Hagen’s transformative “Destination” exercise. Refine emotional range with voice modulation exercises and immerse yourself in practical techniques and objectives with Robert Cohen’s illuminating “Actor’s Triangle.” Together, unlock the keys to captivating performances and elevate your craft to new heights. In week 3 you will fine-tune your weeks 1 and 2 craft and deepening your performances.
Make final adjustments before immersing yourself in full run-throughs of scenes, adorned in costume and wielding props. Harnessing these acting techniques, you’ll infuse your portrayal with authenticity and depth, ensuring a compelling and memorable performance that captivates.
As we reach the culmination of our four-week journey, we dive headfirst into the realm of acting for the camera.
With a focus on framing, eye line, and other essential techniques, actors refine their on-screen presence, ensuring a seamless transition to the visual medium. Scene rehearsals become a playground for exploring emotional truth, integrating techniques from Strasberg, Meisner, Adler, Hagen, and Cohen to imbue performances with authenticity and depth. Emphasizing the character’s objectives, actors fine-tune their portrayals, bringing forth nuanced performances that resonate with audiences.
In a pivotal moment, the actors adjust their performances for the camera, applying their newfound skills to captivate viewers on-screen.
Finally, the culmination of their efforts unfolds as on-camera work is played back and critiqued, providing invaluable insights and further refinement for future endeavors. Through this holistic and progressive approach, actors emerge equipped with the tools and confidence to navigate the diverse landscape of performance art.
